Getting Started with ChatGPT: It’s Easier Than You Think

If you've been hearing a lot about ChatGPT and similar tools, but still haven’t tried it, you’re not alone. For many people, the idea of using artificial intelligence is intimidating. In fact, using ChatGPT is as easy as sending a text. In this post, I’ll walk you through exactly how to get started (with the promise that once you do, your universe will open up.

So, you don’t need any technical background to use ChatGPT. As the name implies, it’s a chat-based tool powered by AI, which means you simply type in a question or request—and it responds instantly, like a helpful coworker who happens to know a lot about almost everything.

You don’t need to download anything or install complicated software. Just follow these three steps:

  1. Go to chat.openai.com

  2. Create a free account using your email or Google/Microsoft login.

  3. Start typing in the chat box—just like you would in a text or email.

There is no learning curve.

Here are a few ideas for your first ChatGPT request:

  • Can you help me write a friendly email to a coworker?

  • I am a marketer—what are some ways ChatGPT can make my life easier?

  • I have a presentation coming up on (subject). Please create an outline for me.

  • Do you have any ideas for making cold-calling easier?

ChatGPT requests like these are called prompts. I would say that it’s best to start with simple, one-sentence prompts until you get comfortable.  And if you don’t get exactly the response you were hoping for, let ChatGPT know—i.e. “I need a friendly email introducing myself to a new coworker that is just out of college.” and it will deliver a more relevant response.

These are tips for getting started with the free version. Right now, the basic paid version is only $20/month. If you plan to use ChatGPT for work (first be sure your employer allows it), go with the paid version. It allows you to attach documents to prompts, which opens up an entirely different world. For example, you can attach a PowerPoint and ask ChatGPT for feedback. Yesterday, I attached a very long detailed, but disorganized contact list that someone sent me that was in Word. I needed it in a spreadsheet. The prompt went something like this: “Please create an Excel spreadsheet, with the first name, last name, company name, and email address of every contact using the information in the attached document.  It took ChatGPT 90 seconds.  It would have taken me 2+ hours

Still Feeling Hesitant? That’s Normal

Trying something AI-related can feel daunting. But the beauty of ChatGPT is that it’s designed to be intuitive and welcoming for everyone. You don’t have to get it perfect. Just ask something, and go from there.
